I am sure we have all
experienced days or a series of days where we simply just cannot find the time
to do anything but work! I
am currently in a seven day stretch of working very long days and nights.
In a way it is
my own fault for trying to work a part-time job, internship and temp as much as
humanly possible!
I am not complaining about working a ton because I could use
the money (who could not?). I am grateful because I know that so many people
are still trying to find work in this tough economy. So I am happy to work just a bit sleep deprived!
I am the kind of person that loves to constantly stay busy. I
jam pack my days until they are busting at the seams. Sometimes it is hard for me to take even a few moments to relax
and just let my brain space out.
Hence, I was inspired to write this blog about my top 8 ways
to make time to relax in a hectic schedule.
1. Music
In between driving to my various jobs, I always blast my favorite tunes on the radio. I find that singing along with all my favorite songs helps me to get out any nervous energy or anxiety. I also roll down the windows when the weather is nice so that I can experience the outdoors even if I am inside all day.
2. Look up
I never want to get so busy that I miss the small beauties in life. I make sure to look up at the sky and take a few moments to lose myself in the clouds. I touch the flower petals, the leaves on the trees and the tall grass.
3. Treat yourself
Whenever I am going through a long work week I make sure to treat myself to something yummy like fresh fruit, a frosty drink from Starbucks or a pretzel at the mall. It may not be sweets that you crave, but make sure to indulge in something that you love so you can get through the rest of the day.
4. Phone a friend
My friends and family definitely keep me sane during stressful periods in my life! So when walking to and from work or driving around doing errands, I take a few minutes to chat with them. When driving I always make sure to use my built-in car Bluetooth system! Have to stay safe!
5. Power nap
It is important to keep your mind as fresh and alert as possible. Sometimes while working long consecutive hours I have to take a power nap to regain my center and defog my brain. The key to a power nap is that it has to be SHORT! If you make the mistake of taking a multiple hour nap you will be drowsy for the rest of the day.
6. Day dream
Sometimes you just need a few moments to day dream and detach your brain from the task at hand. I find that I tend to do this more when I am doing a monotonous task and need to daydream about my lunch, that night’s plans or upcoming travels to help me get through the assignment.
7. TV
I am aware that not everyone is a huge television watcher, but there are moments when I come home after a long day and just need a half hour of down time. I usually turn on a mindless sitcom that is funny, but does not require too much brain activity. My new favorite is The Big Bang Theory. Too funny!
8. Remember
It always helps me to remember that tomorrow is a new day and that it may not be as stressful or as jam-packed with errands, deadlines and other stressful tasks. Stay positive!
How to you destress during a hectic day? What is your favorite thing to do?
