Angelina Speaks Out About Her Double Mastectomy

Angelia Jolie has been all over the tabloids for a variety of reasons including her relationship with Billy Bob Thornton, her bizarre red carpet date with her brother, her large brood of multi-ethnic children and most notably her relationship with Brad Pitt.

People have always been extremely critical of Angelia especially after she swooped in and stole American sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston’s, husband and then they proceeded to raise six children together over the years. After years of controversy, Brad and Angelina managed to stay out of the lime light as much as possible and raise their family. They are an incredibly private couple, who recently decided to make a very personal disclosure…

Angelina Jolie has undergone a double mastectomy in order to radically decrease her chances of getting breast cancer, which apparently runs in the family. Earlier this year Jolie underwent blood testing that proved she was genetically susceptible to cancer.

According to OMG!, the Oscar-winning actress admits,
“The truth is I carry a ‘faulty’ gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer,” she writes. “Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.”
As a mother of six and a woman who lost her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, to cancer at the age of 56, Jolie decided that the double mastectomy would be the best options for herself and her family. Over the past three months, from February to April, Jolie underwent several medical procedures to remove and reconstruct her breasts.

As you can imagine her gorgeous fiancé, Brad was with Jolie every step of the way. Angelina says,
“I am fortunate to have a partner, Brad Pitt, who is so loving and supportive,” says Jolie. “Brad was at the Pink Lotus Breast Center, where I was treated, for every minute of the surgeries. We managed to find moments to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has.”
Although she was able to keep the procedures under wraps, Angelina wanted to shed light on her situation to help other women that may be experiencing the same health challenges.

Since the procedure Jolie’s chances of developing breast cancer has dropped “from 87 percent to under 5 percent”.  Although it was a major risk, Jolie encourages any woman who is considering taking such a major step in safeguarding their health to discuss their risk factors with doctors as well as their options. In the article she goes on to state that, “on a personal note, I do not feel any less of a woman.” Instead, Jolie says she feels empowered by her heroic choice and that it does not decrease or affect her femininity in any way! Do not worry Jolie, you are still gorgeous!

Her fiancĂ© was equally positive and supportive of his woman, saying, “having witnessed this decision firsthand, I find Angie’s choice, as well as many others like her, absolutely heroic.” [via People]

Now Angelina can get back to the things that matter like planning her wedding, focusing on raising her family and spending a long happy healthy live with the ones she loves!

What do you think about Angelina’s disclosure?
