DIY: Gift Wrapping

Yesterday was my mother’s birthday and this upcoming weekend we will also be celebrating Mother’s day, which means a lot of gift wrapping in a little bit of time!

Luckily, I am a gift wrapping wizard since my grandmother taught me at a young age. For those that could use a little help check out this week’s step by step gift wrapping DIY

Gather all your supplies: wrapping paper, scissors, tape, gift box, ribbons or bows.

Measure out the amount of paper necessary for wrapping the gift and cut. Try to let the scissor glide against the paper to prevent rough edges or snags in the paper.

Take the first side of the wrapping paper and tape it half way to the center of the gift.

Take the other side of the paper and slightly fold it over so that the edge is completely smooth and tape it flat. Use clear tape. I like to use a good amount of tape depending on the size of the package. For larger packages I usually use about three pieces to secure the top layer of wrapping paper and prevent gapping.

Next is my favorite part of the whole wrapping process, folding in the flaps. Now there are two ways of doing it…

The first way consists of pushing the top flap of paper downwards so that the paper it lays flat against the gift box. Then fold the two side flaps inward, finally fold the bottom triangular flap upwards. Gently creasing the flap over until it is flat then tape to secure the top and the side of the paper. Sidenote: Make sure to pull the flaps tight when you are taping to maintain the shape of the gift. There should not be any gapping or wrinkles.

Another method of wrapping the ends is starting with the bottom seam still facing upwards, fold down the upper flaps, gently creasing the paper against the edge of the box. Next, fold up the lower flaps. If the exposed edge of the flap is not straight, fold under a small amount of paper on both ends of the box. Finally, secure the flaps with tape. [via Kaboose]

The last few steps are where you can add some flare either through a creative name tag, ribbons of a stick on bow! For my gift I used two stick on bows that nicely complimented the colors on the wrapping paper.

You could also take ribbon and curl it. First, measure out and cut the necessary amount of ribbon so that it fits comfortably around the present and has excess to curl. There is a bunch of really creative ways to do this! I like to pair three different color ribbons together and wrap them around the present then tie them in the center and curl the ends.

Another way consists of using two ribbons: wrap one horizontally and one vertically until the meet in the center. Tie them in a knot and curl the ends.

Now how to curl the ribbons; use longer strands of ribbon for longer curls and medium length strands forshort little curls. My advice is to use longer strands to start with since it is hard to gauge how much they will shrink when they curl and if you want them to be shorter just cut them!

Start at the top of the ribbon, take the blade of the scissors and press it against the ribbon, place your thumb on top of the ribbon to secure it against the blade of the scissors. Then quickly run the blade of the scissors along ribbon until you reach the end. If done properly this should create beautiful spiral curled ribbons.

Lastly, leave a cute note, heartfelt card or name tag on the gift so the recipient knows exactly who it came from!

Lovelies, how do you like to wrap presents? What is your favorite part? How are you creative with gift wrapping?
